Emerging Technologies Week 3: Engages with opposing views related to the benefits and implications of technology; Reflects on the meaning & fear of innovation & technology

When it comes to technology, there can be many debates about the good and bad that it brings. Personally, a current debate about technology that catches my attention is misinformation. There is so much information that one can find with a few clicks that it can be hard to tell which source is reliable or not. When writing pieces to publish, some people post with the intent of sharing their own personal bias without acknowledging it. Without this acknowledgement, some people will take those words and deem it reliable when in reality it's a personal opinion. In addition to finding unlabeled biases, it can be very easy for one to find information that solely is not true or reliable. For example, a high school student might need to research about U.S. history and uses Wikipedia to gain all of their information. Even though Wikipedia sometimes includes sources for where the information is coming from, the overall piece that is written is a rando...

Emerging Technologies Week 2: Begins to engage with ideas related to the benefits and implications of technology

Prompts:      ● Focus on the technology you identified in the Week 1 journal entry to consider and respond to these questions:           ○ Why do I use that technology?           ○ What purpose does this technology hold for me?           ○ Analyze the design of the technology. What is the message that this technology sends to me about my values and how I move within/engage with the world?           ○ What about my daily life might be different if I lost access to that technology                When I think of social internet, I like to think of creativity and connection.  Even though I do not post or publish content that I feel might inspire myself and others, I like to hide behind the screen and absorb the posts created by others. Recently, I have been in a creative slump, which I f...

Emerging Technologies Week 1: Understands and defines the meaning of technology; differentiates between technology and emerging technologies

In The Meaning of Technology, Pacey claims, “Thus my argument is that, if we wish to understand what technology means to those who invent, tinker with, build, or just use its products, we must investigate how the aesthetic is intertwined with the practical; how the giving meaning is related to building and making; and how work with tools or with hands may have some correspondence with musical experience” (p. 18). Identify a technology that you use daily. Name it. Then, describe your personal relationship to it. How use using it make you feel? What meaning does it bring to your life?                  Social internet is a place where I find myself daily, whether that be at home, in the workplace or even at my local grocery store. Not only can you see entertaining videos, but you can also keep in touch with the lives of your family members and friends. For me, the app that I tend t...
